Running around to Give you the Reacharound

And now, starting at....color commentator for Fox Sports South?

I am trying to figure out the best way to process this news, but all that comes to my mind is a jumble of incoherent thoughts supplemented with anger and confusion. Couple of questions:

  • Why is Nique...the face of the franchise, a Hall of Famer, the Greatest Hawk ever, agreeing to do this? Could you imagine Hank Aaron as a Braves announcer on SportSouth in the 80s or 90s? Do any other NBA legends (at least of the last 20 years) do color commentary for their team's local broadcasts? The other greats of his time are GMs, Presidents or co-owners of other franchises... or they're doing national commentary... or they're costing their former employers millions of dollars in sexual harassment suits and buyouts. Is doing color commentary not a bit beneath him?
  • Does anyone else find it perplexing, as Peachtree Hoops points out, that Wilkins' role as color commentator might be compromised by his title of VP of Basketball? In last year's postgame commentary he was very vague and hesitant in his critiquing of the Hawks players and coaches. Isn't having the man who is supposed to represent all that is right with the franchise in role of on-court critic an enormous conflict of interest?

Whatever. Trying to make sense of any decision by Hawks management is a waste of time. When it comes to this franchise, it's best to focus only on what happens between the 94 x 50 rectangle in the center of Phillips Arena....only 27 days til tipoff...
